Baby Care

As per WHO guidelines, you should exclusively breastfeed all babies until six months of age. After that, you can start introducing solid food and continue breastfeeding until the baby is two years.

As long as the baby is exclusively breastfed, the baby's nourishment is solely dependent on breastmilk. But once you introduce solid food, it is very important to provide a balanced diet based on the baby’s age.

Providing age-appropriate healthy food is highly essential for the baby's overall development. It helps in the baby’s physical and mental development and boosts immunity.

What Are The Importance Of Healthy Food In Babies?

- Helps in normal development

The physical and mental development of babies depends on the food they eat. Calcium and Vitamin D, which are present in formula milk, are highly essential for strong teeth and bones. Fruits and vegetables provide the necessary vitamins for the body. Grain-based food like bread and pasta provides long-lasting energy to the baby. Protein-rich food like fish, chicken and egg helps’ in the physical growth of the baby. Thus, you should provide a mix of all types of food for the healthy growth of the baby.

- Build immunity

Breastfed babies get immunity from breast milk. But once you wean the baby, you should ensure that the baby is fed immunity-building food. Food containing blueberry and blackberry is rich in antioxidants and helps fight off diseases. Blueberry is a rich source of vitamin C which protects the baby from the common cold.

- Helps gain body weight

A healthy diet helps the baby gain and stay within the ideal body weight. Dairy products like milk and butter, homemade smoothies, and cereals like wheat and rice cereal help babies gain the right amount of weight.  You can also provide salmon and other oily fish that helps in weight gain.

- Boost brain function

Nutritious food is highly essential to boost brain function, which can help the baby later on when they go to school. A high level of iron, Vitamin E and Omega 3 help better cognitive development. Food items like fatty fish, eggs, peanuts and almond butter contain a high level of Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acids. Beans, peas and dark leafy vegetables are rich in iron. Including these food items in the baby’s diet helps boost brain function.

While providing fruits and vegetables, try organic produce that is free from pesticides and insecticides. In addition to healthy and balanced food, you should also provide all babies above six months with water. This helps to keep the baby hydrated and flush out any toxins from the body.

Conclusion

Once the baby is weaned off from breast milk, it is highly essential to provide healthy food to the baby. Healthy food helps in the normal physical development and weight gain in babies. It helps build immunity which helps to ward off a lot of diseases. In addition, it also boosts brain function which is highly essential for the healthy growth of the baby.
